Drum Kit Tuition
I teach kit drums in varying styles. This includes covering the genres of rock, jazz, blues, folk, punk, reggae and funk.
I always make sure that my relationship with my students is a friendly one, so as they are not afraid to ask questions, try new things, or make mistakes.
I always teach in a way that is suitable for all types of learners; visual, aural and kinaesthetic. I do this by using a variety of teaching devices.
- Playing and then the student playing back to me, as well as using my voice to represent different drum kit sounds (aural).
- Being observed playing and using written drum notation as a language for explaining rhythm (visual).
- Making sure each student gets practice time and a chance to play to CD’s, write their own patterns and experiment with their own ideas (kinaesthetic).
What makes my one to one tuition more interesting than a lot of other music lessons is the fact that I regularly give each student the chance to play along in a live situation. I do this by playing as an accompaniment on piano myself, or by bringing in a bass player or guitar player for some lessons. This allows the student to put what they are learning into practice in a live and realistic situation, which in turn means that they are taught skills that can only be learned by playing with other people; such as dynamic control, musicality, and being able to recover when it all goes wrong.
Overall I think my attitude to teaching, and my varying approaches to suit the individual, as well as being able to play varying styles, makes me a good all round teacher for any breed of drummer.
I can teach either at my home address on a provided drum kit, or I can come to you.
